Vandaag schreef ik aan Farrell (de president) om hem te vragen snel mijn pensionering te regelen. Zodra ik hier uit ben, gaan we trouwen en ergens rustig wonen…
Ze namen me van huis mee hierheen, naar Martin Garcia. Ik weet niet waarom ik hier ben, ze vertellen me niets. Wat denk je over Farrell en Avalos ? Een stelletje schoften, dat ze hun vriend dit aandoen. Zo is het leven. Het eerste wat ik deed toen ik hier aankwam was jou schrijven…
Je moet kalm blijven en om je gezondheid denken, ik wil dat je gezond bent als ik terugkom. Ik zou rustiger zijn als ik wist dat je niet in gevaar was en dat het goed met je ging. Zeg alsjeblief tegen Mercante dat hij met Farrell moet gaan praten om te zien of ze me laten gaan en wij dus met z’n tweeën naar Chubut kunnen vertrekken (een zuidelijke Argentijnse provincie. Peron schijnt erover gedacht te hebben om zich daar terug te trekken). Ik denk ook dat je wat juridische zaken moet gaan regelen…
Blijf heel kalm. Mazza zal je vertellen hoe alles ervoor staat. Ik zal alles doen om naar Buenos Aires terug te komen… Als mijn pensionering erdoor is gaan we de dag erna trouwen en als het niet lukt, zal ik op de een of andere manier wat dingen regelen. Maar in ieder geval zullen we een eind maken aan jouw kwetsbare situatie.
Lieveling, ik heb die kleine foto’s van jou in m’n kamer en ik kijk iedere dag naar ze met tranen in mijn ogen. Het zal m’n dood zijn als er iets met je gebeurt. Pas goed op jezelf en maak je geen zorgen om mij, maar hou veel van me omdat ik je liefde meer dan ooit nodig heb…
Ik ga over al deze dingen een boek schrijven… en dan zullen we zien wie er gelijk had.
Het kwaad van deze tijd en in het bijzonder van dit land is dat er zoveel idioten zijn, je weet dat een dom mens erger is dan een slecht mens.

GETUIGENISSEN van mensen die Evita aan het werk gezien hebben
«In een klein kantoor met rood damast aan de muren stonden rijen banken overladen met haveloos ogende vrouwen en kinderen met hun gezicht naar haar bureau. Baby’s krijsten. Iedereen sprak door elkaar heen. Het bureau van de señora stond onder een licht naast een meer dan levensgrote, bronzen buste van één of andere held van de Argentijnse onfhankelijkheid. De gang buiten stond vol met mensen die wachtten om een glimp van de señora op te vangen.
Toen ze eindelijk arriveerde, werd het vloedlicht aangeschakeld en er ontstond een gedrang van fotografen in het kleine vertrek. Voorname bezoekers werden in een bewonderende groep achter het knappe, blonde hoofd van de señora opgesteld, die zich over haar bureau boog om naar de problemen van de arme vrouwen en hun huilende kinderen te luisteren.
«Ze is te dun,» mompelde één van de vrouwen hardop. «Die vrouw werkt zichzelf nog dood.»
Aan het slot van elk verhaal over pech en tegenslag reikte de señora met haar beringde vingers onder het vloeiblad op het bureau en haalde twee biljetten van 50 pesos te voorschijn. Daarna schreef ze met een snelle krabbel op een roze strookje een cheque uit voor een dokter of een pop voor het kleine meisje…
Toen een delegatie zakenlieden verscheen met een cheque van vijf cijfers voor de stichting van de señora werden alle andere activiteiten opgeschort en poseerde ze voor de fotografen. De cheque moest ook op de foto. De señora stak haar witte hand uit om hem in ontvangst te nemen. De leider van de delegatie bood hem haar met een eerbiedwaardige buiging aan…»

«Er waren groepen arbeiders, vakbondsleiders, plattelandsvrouwen met hun kinderen, buitenlandse journalisten; een gaucho-familie met hun poncho’s, de man met zijn lange zwarte bakkebaarden; er waren vluchtelingen afkomstig van achter het Ijzeren Gordijn; mensen die uit het naoorlogse Europa waren gekomen; intellectuelen en hoogleraren uit de Baltische Staten; priesters en monniken; dikke, luidruchtige, zweterige vrouwen van middelbare leeftijd; jonge ambtenaren en voetballers, acteurs en mensen van het circus….
Te midden van deze ogenschijnlijke chaos, deze lawaaiige en verwarde kermis luisterde Evita naar alles wat haar werd gevraagd, van een eenvoudig verzoek om loonsverhoging tot een hele bedrijfstak omvattende regeling en daarnaast nog een verzoek om een plek voor een gezin om te wonen, meubilair, om een baan op een school, voedsel, toestemming om een film te maken, allerlei soorten financiële steun, klachten over machtsmisbruik, interviews, eerbewijzen, vergaderingen, inhuldigingen, politieke bijeenkomsten van vrouwen, het overhandigen van giften en donaties. Evita was onvermoeibaar. Ze wist deze hele vertoning urenlang in beweging te houden, vaak tot ver na middernacht.»

Compañeros, compañeros! Mag ik u aankondigen op deze historische Open Vergadering van het Justicialismo:[236] Zijne Excellentie de President, Generaal Juan Domingo Perón.
Het volk roept om Evita.
Espejo:
Generaal, ziehier het volk van ons vaderland verenigd om zich, zoals altijd op belangrijke momenten bij u, zijn enige leider, te melden.
Volk blijft om Evita roepen.
Espêjo:
Generaal, het is duidelijk dat hier iemand ontbreekt, namelijk uw echtgenote, Eva Perón, zoals er maar één op de wereld is.
Volk:
Evita moet komen, waar is Evita?
Espejo:
Compañeros… Misschien komt het door haar bescheidenheid, wat misschien haar allergrootste deugd is, en (de rest van zijn woorden wordt overstemd)
Sta mij toe, generaal, dat we haar gaan halen, zodat ze hier aanwezig kan zijn.
Espejo loopt weg.
Wanneer hij terugkomt loopt Evita voor hem.
Espejo:
Ik stel voor dat we generaal Juan Perón uitroepen tot kandidaat voor het presidentschap van de republiek en mevrouw Eva Perón tot kandidaat voor het vice-presidentschap.
Evita kruipt weg in de armen van haar man. Dan verschijnt ze onzeker aan de balustrade van het podium. Ze beweegt haar lippen, maar er komt geen geluid. Dan begint ze eindelijk aan haar lange toespraak.
(Er bestaan complete versies van de toespraak op film, ze werden uitgezonden in het Spaanse ‘NoDo’ bioscoopjournaal. Hier wordt er slechts een deel van die toespraak weergegeven)
Evita:
[…] Ik heb niets gedaan. Het is allemaal Perón. Perón is het vaderland, Perón is alles, en wij staan allemaal oneindig ver van de leider van ons vaderland. Met het geestelijke mandaat dat de descamisados van ons land me geven, roep ik u, generaal, uit tot president van Argentinië, nog voordat het volk u heeft gekozen.
(ovatie)
Perón omhelst haar, de film toont chaotische beelden van het podium. Een niet nader geïdentificeerde vakbondsleider, op de rug gezien, staat oog in oog met Evita.
Vakbondsleider:
U hebt nog niet gezegd of u de kandidatuur wel of niet aanvaardt mevrouw… (hij draait zich naar de microfoon toe)
Mevrouw, het volk wacht… Wat is uw antwoord?
Volk:
Evita moet ja zeggen…/ Evita moet ja zeggen…
Espejo:
Compañeros, laten we luisteren naar de woorden van generaal Perón.
Perón loopt op de microfoon af, maar blijft plotseling stilstaan. Het volk blijft roepen om Evita. Na een korte speech, waarin Perón de kandidatuur aanvaardt, begint het volk weer om Evita te roepen.
Volk:
Laat Evita spreken, Evita moet ja zeggen!
Evita:
Mijn lieve, dierbare descamisados…
Vrouwen , kinderen en arbeiders die hier samen zijn, ik vraag de CGT en ik vraag jullie me niet te dwingen tot iets wat ik nooit heb gewild. Bij de liefde die ons verbindt, vraag ik jullie mij minstens vier dagen bedenktijd te geven voor het nemen van een beslissing die zulke verstrekkende gevolgen heeft voor het leven van deze nederige vrouw.
Volk:
Nee, nu! Evita, nu!
Evita:
Compañeros. Begrijp, me goed. Ik zie niet af van mijn strijdbare positie. Ik zie af van het eerbetoon. Ik blijf hopen, zoals Alexander De Grote...op uw glorie en uw liefde en die van generaal Perón.
Volk:
Geef-ant-woord! Zeg-ja-zeg-ja!
Compañeros…ik had iets anders in gedachten, maar uiteindelijk zal ik doen wat het volk zegt (ovatie) Denken jullie niet dat als de functie van vice-president een probleem had gevormd en ik daarvoor de oplossing was geweest, ik allang ja zou hebben gezegd? Morgen, wanneer…
Volk:
Nu meteen! Nu meteen!
Eva draait zich om naar Perón. Hij fluistert iets in haar oor (volgens sommige getuigen die ook op het podium stonden zei hij: «Laat ze weggaan! Vraag of ze weggaan.»
Evita:
Compañeros…bij de liefde die ons verbindt (een snik belet haar het spreken.) Ik vraag jullie me alsjeblief niet te dwingen tot iets wat ik niet wil. Ik smeek jullie als vriendin, als compañero, uiteen te gaan…
Volk:
Nee! Nee!
We gaan staken / Allemaal staken!
Evita:
Het volk is soeverein. Ik aanvaard
Volk:
Ze zegt ja! Ze zegt ja!
Evita:
Nee, compañeros! Jullie vergissen je. Ik wilde zeggen: ik aanvaard het voorstel van compañero Espejo…Morgenochtend om twaalf uur…
Volk: (er klinkt gefluit)
Nee, nu! Nu meteen!
Evita:
Ik smeek jullie even bedenktijd. Als ik morgen…
Volk:
Nee! Nu!
Eva draait zich nogmaals om naar Perón. Haar ogen staan hol van verbijstering en paniek. Op één van de twee edities van het ‘NoDo’ journaal vormen haar lippen duidelijk de vraag «Wat moet ik doen?»
Evita:
Compañeros…Wanneer heeft Evita jullie ooit bedrogen? Wanneer heeft Evita niet gedaan wat jullie wilden?Beseffen jullie dan niet dat voor mij, net als voor ieder ander, deze beslissing heel ingrijpend is? terwijl ik jullie maar een paar uur de tijd vraag…
Het volk blijft roepen Nu! Nu! Nu!
Evita barst in tranen uit.
Evita:
En toch ben ik door dit alles niet overrompeld. Ik wist al een hele tijd dat mijn naam hardnekkig genoemd werd en heb dat gerucht ook niet tegengesproken. Ik heb dat voor het volk en voor Perón gedaan, omdat er niemand was die hem ook maar in de verste verte kon benaderen. Ik heb het voor jullie gedaan, opdat jullie op die manier de mensen met ambitie binnen de Partij konden leren kennen. Door mijn naam te gebruiken kon de generaal zich tijdelijk voor onenigheid binnen de partij behoeden.
Ik ben niet ik. Ik ben wat mijn man wil dat ik ben. Ik geef hem de kans zijn plannen met mijn naam te smeden. Hij heeft mij zijn naam gegeven, nu geef ik hem de mijne.
Maar in mijn hart heb ik, als eenvoudige Argentijnse vrouw, nooit gedacht dat ik deze functie zou aanvaarden. Compañeros…
Volk:
Nee! Nee!
Evita:
Vanavond… het is nu kwart over zeven. Ik…Alstublieft…Vanavond om half tien zal ik voor de radio…
Volk:
Nu! Nu!
In de tweede editie van het ‘NoDo’ journaal zit een overzichtsbeeld van het podium. De sfeer lijkt gespannen.Espejo geeft Perón een verwarde, onhoorbare verklaring. Evita vraagt zich af wat ze moet doen. Ze kijkt niet meer naar haar man. Ze zou in verwijten moeten uitbarsten, maar ze slikt ze in. Perón wijst, met zijn rug naar de menigte, naar de camera.
Perón:
Doek de vergadering onmiddellijk op!
Espejo:
Compañeros… Mevrouw…
Compañera Evita vraagt ons slechts twee uur te wachten. Wij zullen hier blijven tot ze ons haar besluit heeft meegedeeld. We zullen niet weggaan voordat ze een positief antwoord op de wens van de arbeiders gegeven heeft.
Evita:
Compañeros, zoals generaal Perón al zei, zal ik doen wat het volk wil.
