Aan het ziekenbed moet de seculiere geneeskunde het afleggen tegen de religie. Op de achtergrond onderzoekt een arts het urineglas. Zijn houding lijkt aan te tonen dat hij geen overhaaste conclusies wil trekken, maar de voorgrond wordt gedomineerd door biddende figuren en voorbereidingen voor het toedienen van de laatste sacramenten. Test voor schedelfractuur. De dokter geeft instructies uit het boek aan de patiënt. De test is bedoeld om te bepalen of er wel degelijk een breuk van de schedel heeft plaatsgevonden, aangezien er geen duidelijke zwelling of depressie is. Hiertoe wordt de patiënt opgedragen om mond neus en oren dicht te stoppen en hard te blazen. Het ontsnappen van lucht of andere materie zou een teken zijn van een barst en dus van een schedelfractuur.

Middeleeuwse astronomen aan het werk. De centrale figuur bestudeert met een astrolabium de sterrenhemel. Links achter de astronoom staat een schrijver die de metingen vastlegt. Rechts zit, aan de cijfers in zijn boek te zien, een wiskundige. Een astrolabium is een hoekmeter en wordt gebruikt om de graden van de hemellichamen ten opzichte van elkaar te meten. Dit instrument was bekend in de oudheid, maar werd pas via Spaanse Arabieren in de late tiende eeuw in christelijk Europa geïntroduceerd (Parijs, Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal, MS 1186, f.iv, afgebeeld in: M.
